What Actually Happens in a First Therapy Session?

Many people delay starting therapy because they are unsure what to expect. The truth is that a first session is usually much gentler than people imagine.

Your therapist will typically ask what has brought you to therapy, what you are hoping for, and a little about your life and history. You are always in control of what you share and when. There is no pressure to talk about anything you are not ready to explore.

A first session is also your opportunity to ask questions — about confidentiality, how sessions work, and whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you. The relationship between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of helpful therapy, so it is okay to take your time deciding.

If you have been thinking about reaching out, we would be glad to hear from you.
